Eyeball Responses to Electric Stimulation and Rapid Freezing of Posterior Semicircular Canal Nerves in Rabbits

Abstract
In urethane anesthetized rabbits, unilateral posterior semicircular canal nerve was either. s"tiri bated with square-wave pulses or subjected to rapid freezing . and the responses of the eyeball were observed. Eyeball responses to electric stimulation ¢¥of the - posterior semicircular canal nerves were compared to those of rapid t--reezingof the semicircular canals. The experimental results were compared to those of the previous authors obtained in,the same species, and the following -vesuits Were :,obtained:
1. Comparing the observations of the present -author and TUtsumi, bilateral eyeball responses to the anterior and horizontal semicircular -canal nerve stimulation appeared to be similar
2. The ipsilateral eyeball. responses to the posterior semicircular canal nerve stimulation ?were correspondent to Utsunu¢¥s observation;. whereas the contralateral eyeball responses to ,..the posterior semicircular canal. .nerve stimlatioa were contradicto -to those observed by :Utsum
3. Rapid freezing of the unilateral posterior semicircular canal elicited a biphasic (primary and secondary) response in the bilateral eyeballs; the primary response `was inferred ¢¥to ¢¥be one by caloric stimulation (cold stimulation), acid the secondary response¢¥ was inferred to be one by freezing effect.
4. In rapid freezing of the posterior semicircular canal, the eyeball responses were reversed by changing the side of canal; the same was true,. in electric stimulatft.
Assuming that the secondary response of the eyeball of was elicited ting feot of the ie"11 the ;present observation appears to suppas the previous observation-obtained by electric stimulation of the canal in `the same y. species, and these observation" further:: suggests that the results of Utsumi contain experimental errors.
